Best Practices

Below, we've highlighted some best practices that you should follow when creating a guide:

  • We prefer the side navigation layout. Research has shown that tab navigation is not as effective at engaging students.
  • We use the default colors for the navigation layout (dark blue and light blue).
  • We primarily use Tahoma, a standard sans serif font, and the default font color (dark gray), which is labeled "automatic."
  • We have a useful guide called "reusable boxes" that houses boxes we want to reuse on other pages. This includes things like the SLC and Library hours. You can only edit these boxes within that guide, but please don't edit existing boxes without our permission!
  • We can link to Films on Demand videos using the LTI embed link, but not directly into the other databases.
  • The SLC LibGuide is a good example to follow when creating your own guide.

Writing for Libguides

"LibGuides" refers to the web-based software package by SpringShare. A guide is a librarian-created web page that is an aid for subject- or course-based research. There are subject guides, course guides, and general guides.

  • Write clearly and simply.
  • Put the most important information at the top.
  • Avoid long paragraphs of content. Use lists.
  • Less is more! Aim for action content and avoid prose.
  • Break up long lists. Lists with more than 7 items appear long and may not get read.
  • Link to denser material deeper in the page.
