Tomyris of the Massagetae was a queen who took command of the nomadic Massagetae people after her husband, an unnamed king of the Massagetae, died. The Massagetae were a nomadic tribe that resided in modern-day Iran and fell under the wider category of Scythian peoples. The Sagaris was a type of battle-axe widely employed by members of many Scythian cultures, including the Massagetae. They were typically made from copper or bronze and had a long shaft and metal head, with one end resembling a sharp ice pick and the other varying from sharp and axe-like to blunt and hammer-like. Unfortunately, the long shaft is missing from most of the recovered sagaris, including the provided image, but its reach would have proved indispensable to the warriors on horseback.

Made of wood, glue, sinew, and horn, these bow’s comparatively short stature made them ideal for the horseback fighting that the Massagetae preferred. The ends of the bow curved back, the bows fired with considerably more force than other bows of the time. This bow is intended primarily for the cavalry.

In addition to copper and bronze, gold was also widely used in Scythian goods, especially in adornment. As Herodotus writes, ”they employ gold as ornament: and in like manner as regards their horses, they put breast-plates of bronze about their chests, but on their bridles and bits and cheek-pieces they employ gold”. Scythians were specialists in scale armor.
