Music and Audio Project Formats

The standard expectations for audio project settings, are as follows:

  • All audio should be recorded, imported, and exported from software production environments or digital audio workstations (DAWs) as in one of two lossless, uncompressed formats:

    • .aiff (or, .aif)

    • .wav

  • Project settings and audio file formats should be set to the minimum standard of CD quality audio:

    • Sample Rate: 44100 Hz

    • Bit Depth or Sample Size: 16 bit

  • Higher sampling rates and bit depths may be required for specific courses and assignments. However, the department generally advises that students do not submit work at formats higher than 48000 Hz, 24 bits unless required to do so.

Software Expectations

During their first term, all students are provided with access and end-user licenses to the following music software:

  • Avid Pro Tools

  • Apple Logic Pro

  • Ableton Live

  • Cuckos REAPER

  • Steinberg Dorico

By the start of the second term, all MP students are expected to have installed, licensed, and verified their working copies of the above software. Successful completion of the MP degree program is contingent upon maintaining these software licenses, installing updates, and being able to readily access all required music software. If you need technical support, or advice about any of the required music software, please contact RMCAD GO for Tech Support and your department chair, Sean Peuquet(speuquet@rmcad.edu), for assistance.
