History
Hello from the Hugh Thurlow Memorial Library staff! Here is aa little bit of history about us and the resources we offer! Our Library is located in the Tri-boro building, which is packed with amazing people who are always willing to help. The building is also packed with history!
The RMCAD Campus was originally constructed by Jewish Consumptives’ Relief Society,or, JCRS in 1904 as a tuberculosis hospital. Our Library, now known as Hugh Thurlow Memorial Library was constructed 32 years later, after the JCRS repurposed the hospital to serve as a cancer research hospital known as the American Medical Center, or AMC. When Tri-Boro was originally constructed, it was designed to be a dining hall for the cancer research hospital. The original plaque still remains on the building today. Tri-boro hasn’t remained the same, however, we’ve gone through growths and changes! In 2020, on March 30th, we had our grand re-opening displaying the recent renovations, and wall wraps of historical photographs of the AMC campus.
In 2017, the RMCAD Library Director, Hugh Thurlow, passed away suddenly. A memorial was held for Hugh on November 18th, 2017 in the Mary Harris Auditorium. Following the service, a ceremony was held at the Library to rename the building as the Hugh Thurlow Memorial Library. The current librarian, Martha, has been here since 2018. Aura, the library manager, started this year. We also have a LOT of student employees.
The Resources We Offer
Here at the Library, we offer tons of resources. We have your normal Library related resources such as book checkouts, places to lounge and relax, a computer lab; but we also offer more such as academic databases and work alongside with the Student Learning Center, which provides tutoring free of cost. Together, the Library and SLC create the Learning Commons.
Library Catalog
The library catalog is here. Our Library catalog contains all of the books we have physical copies of here at the library.
We keep all kinds of books from textbooks, non-fiction, fiction, and more. You can use our catalog to search through our inventory.
Other Services
Most of our resources are available as academic databases on the portal. To get an idea about what we offer, check out this list: https://rmcad.libguides.com/az/databases
