The Learning Commons has a new person to help you with your writing!

Meet Anne:

My name is Anne and I am excited to be joining the RMCAD team as the new Learning Commons Coordinator. I attended the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia where I studied Psychology and Sociology, played softball and did improv, and eventually earned my Master of Special Education. I have spent the last eight years in public education as both an English teacher and a special educator and I welcome the opportunity to begin working with students at the post-secondary level. In my free time I love to read, cook, do pottery, and stay active by running and doing yoga.

Anne will be taking appointments starting in Week 1 of Spring B (next week). Look for her on the SLC scheduler

As trends come and go, I think this one is here to stay... Journaling!

Journaling has become a very helpful tool as last year was coming to an
end, including all over tik tok and instagram. As I dove into the endless
content of page ideas and self improvement writing prompts, I found a few
things that have helped me.

One... ALWAYS have a page titled Brain Dump. This page will forever be
in my journal. Where you can write literally anything that you are thinking
down on the page and clear it from your mind. ( SO HELPFUL!!!)

Two... Keep a page for trackers, I have a page for my habits and my
moods. This helps me stay on track of things I would like to have go smoothly
in life.

Three... Have fun with the layout, it can be very overwhelming to get
started, however once you get into it, it can be very fun. Then you are looking
up on pinterest different ways to have your pages reflect who you are.

Journaling in a sense has changed my life for the better. I now know
that I will never stop this hobby or new lifestyle. I think everyone can benefit
from this trend that is going around, whether it is to just have a junk page of
nothing but stickers or to help clear things that you're overthinking about. Try
it out, you might just love it.

First, let me start off by saying what a rabbit hole this month's magazine blog has been. I started out with an idea to write about branding; typography, sketching, client dialog, color theory… but when I picked up issue 10 of Graphite Magazine and started researching it’s content and history I found, what I think, is a much needed reminder of the ebb and flow of publication.

Annual 4 issues- 2016

Annual 4 issues- 2017

The magazine was published by 3dtotal Publishing in Worcester, United Kingdom. It was a quarterly magazine that got printed once a year and sold as a set of 4. From what I could find it seems they constructed the first two years as such, then must have sold the last two issues separately, issue 10 April 2018 was the last printed. They are no longer in print however, you can find most on Amazon from anywhere between $10-$988! Although, you know what they say, something is only worth what someone will pay.

Only 2 issues- 2018

You can find several of these issues in the Hugh Thurlow Memorial Library here on the RMCAD campus. Issues 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10 here on display and can be viewed during library hours. These beautifully illustrated magazines have a fount of information about inspiring artists, methods and tricks or the trade. While they are mostly geared toward the illustration industry I found so much info that carries over into interior design and graphic design as well as industrial design, cartoon/character design.

You might be familiar with 3dtotal’s next venture Character Design Quarterly. It is going strong and 3dtotal.com has amazing FREE downloadable content!
