The Global Wellness Institute defines wellness as the active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health. There are two important aspects to this definition. First, wellness is not a passive or static state but rather an “active pursuit” that is associated with intentions, choices and actions as we work toward an optimal state of health and wellbeing. Life satisfaction refers to the cognitive assessment or response that individuals make about their own lives, encompassing their overall assessment of their own existence based on the comparison between their aspirations and achievements. It is an indicator of psychological well-being and is measured using the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), which evaluates individuals' global judgment of their satisfaction with their life. Human flourishing, the state of optimal functioning and well-being across all aspects of an individual’s life, has been a topic of philosophical and theological discussion for centuries. In the mid-20th century, social psychologists and health scientists began exploring the concept of flourishing in the context of health and high-level wellness. However, it is only in recent years, in part due to the USD 43 million Global Flourishing Study including 22 countries, that flourishing has entered the mainstream discourse.
