Each fall in the United States, people of all ages get ready to celebrate Halloween. In the US, Halloween is celebrated with candy, costumes, and trick-or-treating; but what about other countries? What types of traditions are celebrated across the world?

In this post, we’ll be covering the cultural traditions around the world during the time of Halloween.

Ireland

In Ireland, people gather to celebrate Samhain, a tradition that has been around for thousands of years. Samhain is considered the original Halloween and is celebrated much like in the United States, however, there are a few traditions that are specific to their culture.
Samhain originated as a pagan holiday where it’s believed that during the transition of fall and winter, the barriers between the living and the spirit world are broken down.

In current-day Ireland, the holiday is celebrated with trick-or-treating, parades and festivals, and traditional food such as barmbrack which is a sweet bread with dried fruits. Usually, an item such as a ring will be placed inside the bread, those who have the ring in their slice are considered fortunate.

Italy

In Italy, people gather to celebrate Ognissanti, also known as All Saints Day.

During this time, it’s believed that the souls of the deceased return to visit their loved ones and living relatives. Each region of Italy celebrates All Saints Day a bit differently, such as in Sicily, they believe that ghosts reward good children with desserts and sweets, so small gifts are left out for the children to find on the night of Ognissanti.
In Campania, children will walk around wearing boxes in the shape of coffins.

Following Ognissanti, the people of Italy will celebrate All Souls’ Day in remembrance of the dead. During the celebration, people will bring flowers, candles, and share a meal next to the grave site of their loved ones to keep them company.

Japan

In Japan, there has been a surge of individuals celebrating Halloween. In Japan, the celebration doesn’t feature trick-or-treating as we would experience in the US. Instead, they host a parade known as the Kawasaki Halloween Parade. During the parade, people dress up in costumes to celebrate. There are costume competitions, face painting, and even an after-party for adult participants. Attendees are required to register and pay to enter the parade.

Mexico

In Mexico, around the time of Halloween, people celebrate El Dia De Los Muertos also known as The Day of The Dead. During this time people gather to welcome the souls of passed loved ones. It’s believed that upon passing, a person will travel to Chicunamictlan to make their journey to Mictlan, a place of peace and rest.
During El Dia De Los Muertos, family members gather around their loved ones' graves and leave ofrendas, which are altars filled with offerings of food, flowers, photos, and gifts.

Culture over Costume

Despite all of these traditions falling into the same time as Halloween, it’s important to keep in mind that while these events are happening, they aren’t necessarily related to “Western Halloween.”
These cultures take time to practice family traditions to honor their passed loved ones and it’s important to know the difference and remain respectful of each other during this time.

What may be a time of candy and costumes to one, may be a time of prayer and celebration to another, and remember, culture is not a costume!

Sometimes along the way to achieving our goals, we lose steam and get off track, feeling unmotivated to keep going. Fall B comes right after Fall A, with no break. Oof. Thinking about your goals and your motivations are great tools for success and achievement. The days are shortening. Many of us would prefer to sit on the couch, under a blanket, with a cup of cocoa and a pet.

Don’t stop yet! You have homework to do!

How can you prepare for the next term with the same enthusiasm you had when you started?

Sometimes you just have to put one foot in front of the other. One mark on paper, one sentence on paper, can get your juices flowing again. Make a deal with yourself. Set a timer for 15 minutes and work for that fifteen. Then take a break. Repeat as needed.

Look for some other sources of inspiration. Listen to true crime podcasts like most of the library staff. Take a walk in nature. Go to the zoo.

The weather is beautiful right now and the leaves are crunchy. I believe that crunching leaves under my feet is one of the best things in life. Fresh air will clear your head and help you get back to work.

Four. Read our tipsheet on motivation and make an appointment with an SLC Mentor to go over your work. We are here to help.

As a college student you probably care a great deal about your academic performance and you might even be looking for strategies to improve your grades and grade point average. I would like to make the case for increased physical activity as a possible solution.

Sedentary behaviors have increased over the last several decades. Americans are increasingly in a state of inactivity while in the classroom, at work, and when conducting leisure activities. One suggested factor for this is the growing use of technology. Think about it, smart TVs, cell phones, tablets, and computers are all typically used while seated and motionless. Couple this with a trend of increased inactivity in new college students caused by the new life challenges, increased freedom, time spent in class and studying that can all come with the transition to college life and we’ve got a very still situation on our hands.

Fret not, research suggests that increasing physical activity can be one antidote to this stillness that has positive impacts on academic and performance!  Much research has been done on the link between physical activity and academic or cognitive performance and the benefits are seemingly endless…

>Studies have found that college students who engage in physical activity are more likely to have better academic outcomes.

>There is a positive relationship between even light physical activity and performance in the workplace and classroom.

>Physical activity can decrease anxiety and stress, improve a student’s ability to study, and improve cognitive function.

>There is a relationship between intense exercise and memory regulation.

>Exercise results in higher alertness, decreased impulsivity, and increased reaction speed.

>Students with higher levels of exercise had higher grade point averages than students with low levels of exercise.

>The basic cognitive functions related to attention and memory that facilitate learning are enhanced by physical activity and higher aerobic fitness.

>Demonstrated improvements in motivation and morale, improved problem solving and decision making.

>More exercise may alleviate symptoms of depression by increasing the body’s level of serotonin (a primary ingredient in antidepressants)

>Intense physical activity has been shown to improve the attention of children with ADHD

Based on these results, the link seems clear, increased physical activity can improve the factors that facilitate academic success. So, if you’re looking for ways to begin incorporating physical activity into your life to hopefully improve your performance at RMCAD, consider these options:

>Take walk breaks when studying

>Begin incorporating aerobic exercises (swimming, jogging, hiking, weight lifting) into your weekly routine

>If you have to listen to prerecorded lectures, do so while walking or riding a stationary bike

>Get a standing desk
