If you are the type of student that has difficulty with retaining written information without some form of visual elements like me, you probably understand how much of a struggle using databases that provide most of their scholarly resources in this format like JSTOR and EBSCOhost can be for research projects. That's why one of my favorite academic databases RMCAD has to offer is Films on Demand. Through Films on Demand you receive all of the same information you would through our other databases, except you are able to watch actual documented footage relating to whatever it is you are looking for. Whether it be the history of the Samurai of Edo period Japan to learning how to make pop-up books, you are sure to find scholarly resources for all your research needs that are just as reliable as scientific journals.

In one of my current classes, I'm researching personhood and individualistic expression in the Mayan and Aztec civilizations. That being said, there is a lot to be read on personal expression within these cultures, but there is only so many illustrations, photographs, and artifacts that scholars are able to fit into their research papers. By using Films on Demand, I am able to watch the process of how their calendars were read, what their spoken languages sounded like, experience re-enactments of their religious rituals and ceremonies, and overall experience the visual dynamics of these cultures!

Here at RMCAD we have a vast variety of academic resources for our students to use with anything they need, but there is one that is probably overlooked and the name is Bloomsbury. This website is the ultimate guide to a visual arts education. This resource offers instant, searchable access to over 170 books which combine visual inspiration with practical advice on idea generation, research techniques, portfolio development and more, across the main visual arts disciplines. It is an incredible resource for students and educators globally, working across multiple fields of practice, including: Fashion and textiles, Illustration, Photography, Animation, Interior, Marketing and so much more!

For example right now you can see they are displaying  in their featured content The Art of Horror and if you are a horror fan like me this tab is a treat with them offering books and articles on horror from literature to film!

There are many great academic databases on the student portal but none can provide the inspiration and insight into your professional life after RMCAD like Stash Media! Stash Media offers a collection of different online magazines filled with the latest creative work for various ad campaigns, music videos, short film, and any other highly creative commercial creation. One of my favorites from the most recent Stash issue is The Taco Bell Fry Force “Nacho Fries”. This is a recent ad campaign where Taco Bell’s new fries were revealed through an action packed anime mecha sequence.

When exploring this ad on Stash you get access to stunning stills of the ad, statements from the artists and also get to see the ad agencies and people behind it. This can be great for building a data base of potential clients or finding people who you make want to try to connect with in the future.

No matter what type of artist you are you can find the most recent cutting edge work in your field of expertise. Immerse yourself in some of the greatest  creations from todays working artists and checkout Stash today!
